Diy Hummingbird Feeder: Make Your Own Feeder and Attract These Beautiful Birds to Your Garden

Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures that are known for their beauty, speed, and agility. They are attracted to brightly colored flowers and love to feed on nectar. If you want to attract hummingbirds to your garden, one great way to do so is by creating your own DIY hummingbird feeder. In this article, we will share with you some easy steps to create a hummingbird feeder in your backyard.

What You Will Need

Before starting your project, it is important to gather all the necessary materials. You will need:

  • A glass bottle or jar with a lid
  • A plastic plate or saucer
  • A small screw
  • A pair of pliers
  • String or wire
  • A drill with a small drill bit
  • Red paint or tape
  • Sugar and water to make nectar

Steps to Create Your Own DIY Hummingbird Feeder

Step 1: Prepare the Glass Bottle or Jar

Take your glass bottle or jar and remove any labels or glue residue from its surface. Wash it thoroughly with soap and warm water. Once you have cleaned the bottle, use red paint or tape to cover the bottom half of the bottle. This will help attract hummingbirds as they are attracted to bright colors like red.

Step 2: Drill a Hole in the Bottle Lid

Using a drill, make a small hole in the center of the bottle lid. The hole should be just big enough to allow a small screw to pass through. Be sure to drill slowly and carefully, making sure not to crack or break the lid.

Step 3: Create the Feeding Port

Next, take the plastic plate or saucer and use the pliers to bend it into a shallow dish shape. Then, drill a small hole in the center of the plate or saucer. Take your small screw and insert it through the hole in the bottle lid and then through the hole in the plate or saucer. Use the pliers to secure the screw in place.

Step 4: Hang the Feeder

Cut a length of string or wire and tie it around the neck of the bottle or jar. Then, tie the other end of the string or wire to a tree branch or hook in your garden. Make sure the feeder is at a height where it can easily be seen by hummingbirds but not easily accessed by other animals.

Step 5: Make the Nectar

To make the nectar, mix four parts water with one part sugar in a pan and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool before filling the bottle with the nectar.

Step 6: Enjoy Watching the Hummingbirds

You're done! Place the lid back on the bottle and wait for the hummingbirds to arrive. Hang your feeder in a shaded area and change the nectar every few days to keep it fresh. With your new DIY hummingbird feeder, you can enjoy watching these beautiful birds in your garden all year round.
